And it’s no wonder, with the awe-inspiring vistas that stretch in all directions north to Wyoming, east to the Great Plains and south and west into the Rockies. The Rocky Mountain Conservancy wrote a really nice blog for Visit Estes Park a couple of years ago about the best scenic drives in winter. After Trail Ridge opened in 1932, linking the Colorado towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake, the Rocky Mountain News called it a scenic wonder road of the world. You can even walk, snowshoe or cross country ski on the closed sections of Trail Ridge Road. Several side roads like Endovalley Road past the Alluvial Fan, Wild Basin Road to the Wild Basin Trailhead, Upper Beaver Meadows Road and Fern Lake Road to the summer trailhead are closed in winter but are great places to walk or snowshoe in the winter. All other main roads other than the dirt Old Fall River Road on the east side of RMNP are open year round. Even when Trail Ridge Road is closed for the season, the road is open as far as Many Parks Curve weather permitting. The east side of RMNP has more roads and more areas to explore than just Trail Ridge Road. Trail Ridge Road officially closed for the season last year on October 25.On the west side of RMNP, Trail Ridge Road is basically the only road into RMNP. Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved road in the United States, climbs to 12,183 feet and connects the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake. The byway is closed between Many Parks Curve (8 miles from the east side entrances) and the Colorado River trailhead (10 miles from the Grand Lake entrance) in.
