![]() Also since they all are several times stronger then humans they are also use for their brute strength both as laborers and as War beasts. ![]() The ability to speak and control magical beasts: There are various magical Beast most are used for transportation as many of them can fly, teleport or both. Healing spells: spells to heal injuries and illnesses.Ĭurses: curse of death, curse of the plague, curse of pain, curse of Madness. Telekinetic spells: spells to move things toward or away from you and various angles. Mind magic: erasing memories, planting false memories, hypnosis, and spells to make you feel specific emotions.Įlemental Magic: control the elements wind, Fire, Earth, lightning and Light, water. Transformative Magic: transforming people into animals, lead into gold, animals into stone, solids to liquids, liquids to solids, one human into another human and so on. However, they can use Magic on machines and use machines themselves as long as their usage is not that complicated (using a gun is pretty simple, but a wizard might have trouble using a computer). Most Wizards cannot build anything except for the simplest of machines. Use of magic makes it hard to understand machines. If two people attack them, they will have to cast two different spells to defend themselves. Wizards can only use a spell on one object, animal or person at a time. The spell to turn lead into gold will be different from the spell for turning people into gold wizards are limited by the amount of spells they can memorize. Each spell does one particular thing: the spell to make a tornado, for example, will be different from the spell to make a slight breeze. To use Magic requires the aid of some magical object in addition to the spell such as a wand or a magic staff. You have to say the Spell correctly: get the pronunciation wrong and, at best, nothing will happen at all, at worst, you accidentally turn the spell against yourself. It is limited to the sense range of the wizard casting the spell ( if you can't see it, hear it, or smell it then you can't use magic against it).So, Wizards won't get tired from doing spells they could continue doing spells for weeks if they could stay awake that long. Certainly in most cases if it's good enough it doesn't make much difference.Magic in this world comes from an external Force which is virtually Unlimited. It's unclear if this is always true, or if a nonverbal spell can be made to be as powerful as its verbal counterpart with focus and practice. It might have killed her outright had it been cast verbally. The spell, according to the Hogwarts nurse, was less effective because it lacked the verbal component, but still caused "quite enough damage to be getting on with". This is seen in Book 5 when a Death Eater is silenced by Hermione but still manages to disable her. It is also explained that often a nonverbal form of the spell is less powerful than one cast verbally. At Hogwarts, students are expected to begin learning how to cast spells nonverbally in their sixth year after passing their OWLs, and are expected to have mastered them if taking their NEWTs in their seventh year. Much like immature wizards can do magical things without words or a wand without meaning to, a skilled wizard can do magical things without words or even a wand, but intentionally. The words, and even the wand, are simply focal points for the magic the wizard wishes to channel. It's explained in Book 6 that, when a wizard attains a certain level of mastery of magic, they can cast spells without the words. This really stood out for me in the fight scene at the end of movie 5. There were also combats where Harry would say one or two spells and not the rest. But they never covered that in the movies, so for a movie-only audience the ability doesn't exist. The movies, as far as I can remember, completely passed over the idea of casting spells without saying the words.ĮDIT: Yes, this was done in the fifth or sixth book and afterwards. ![]() In the movie, the first detail can be presumed while the second one makes no sense in context (in the book, Harry gave Voldemort a last shot at redemption, and it was thought of as his signature dueling spell), so the scriptwriters dropped it. For example, in the book version of the final fight between Harry and Voldemort, Voldemort uses the Killing Curse while Harry casts a Disarming Charm. ![]() My impression was that they had the characters say the words almost all the time, but that in most fight scenes they skipped out on most of the incantations in order to focus more audience attention on the action. ![]() I assume that the filmmakers wrote the dialogue that way for dramatic effect. ![]()
